I think private medical insurance is great. It probably depends on who your provider is but my first encounter with private medical insurance was in my first retail job; yes yes, I was a shop floor girl in a large department store. Anyhow, I had some, er, problems shall we say of the feminine kind, because of which I was unable to work for a couple of days. When I got back to work from being off sick, I was asked to go see one of the store managers. I had no idea why I was being summoned away from my work and when I got to her office, she was kind of cross faced; I naturally assumed I had done something wrong. I think she asked me a question or two about why I was off sick and I remember wondering whether she didn’t believe me. She said that the department store had a doctor whom she wanted me to see. This was all quite bizarre to a girl of 18, but I want to see the doctor who, for want of a better expression, was equally stern-faced.

My youth and paranoia led to the assumption that they were trying to prove that I had been skiving. Anyhow, the doctor asked me to describe how I had been ill, which I did. She then offered some hugely enlightening pointers into what could have been wrong, and forwarded me on to see a specialist. As it turns out, I am so glad I went because if I hadn’t seen her when I did, it would have caused serious problems for my health and future. Additionally, getting that advice and feedback from the doctor reassured my employers that I wasn’t fibbing, which was also really great. Because I am now working for employers who actually don’t care whether you crawl in on your death bed, as long as you come in. So yay to private medical insurance, I say.
